What R-Value Do You Really Need in a Central Valley Attic?

In the Central Valley, your attic is the single biggest factor in how hard your AC has to work. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-38 to R-60 for attics in our climate zone — yet most homes we inspect are sitting at R-19 or below.

R-value measures resistance to heat flow: the higher the number, the more your insulation slows the summer heat trying to push into your home. For Fresno, Madera, Visalia and the rest of the Valley, R-38 is the practical floor, and going higher pays off given how long and hot our cooling season runs.

But 'just add more' isn't always right. If your existing insulation is compressed, rodent-damaged, or hiding air leaks, piling new material on top wastes money. Air sealing the attic first — top plates, penetrations, and gaps — is what makes the new R-value actually perform.

The honest answer: measure what you have, seal the leaks, then insulate to R-38 or beyond. That's the sequence we've used on Central Valley homes since 1982.
